How Human Activities Can Harm Hummers (continued)

  • Backyard Habitat Risks: Hummingbirds are at risk from house cats that hunt, collisions with picture windows, and diseases picked up from unclean feeders.
  • Pesticide Use. Chemicals used in gardens, landscapes, and farms can kill insects that hummingbirds rely upon for protein. Hummers might also ingest pesticides sprayed onto flowers. These could sicken or kill them.
  • Changing Climate: Scientists are not sure just how global warming does and will affect hummingbirds. (Here some ideas how it might affect plants and animals >>)

Are Journey North's Hummingbirds in Danger?

Neither Ruby-throated nor Rufous Hummingbirds are listed on endangerd species lists. But the Rufous population has fallen from 12 million 40 years ago to about 5 million today. This is likely due to logging and development in its Pacific Northwest breeding range – and in its winter range in Mexico. (Source: Bob Sargeant)

Scientists also don't know the long-term effects of climate change and habitat loss on hummingbirds. Read some of their ideas about it could affect plants and animals. >>
