Setting Up Equipment

To band a hummingbird, you need a band, a special pliers for closing the band on the bird's leg, a magnifying glass to read the band number and see details on the hummingbird's beak, a drinking straw for blowing on the hummingbird's chest to see how much fat is present, and calipers for measuring the hummingbird's wing and tail. You also need all the equipment necessary for making and shaping the band and a trap.

Setting Up Equipment

Considering how tiny a hummingbird is, it's surprising how many different tools are needed to measure and band one!
