News from Observation Post #15
Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada

Kati Martini of Remote Passages Marine Excursions reports for her crew and captains of marine excursions.

April 26: First confirmed mother and calf Gray whale pair of the season was observed by Remote Passages guide Mike Chisholm! The pair were swimming slowly but steadily, very close to shore. As the pair came close to a break in the reefs known locally as Orca Alley, they stopped, hooked around south of the reef, and proceeded north along the outside.

NOTE: Several mother and calf Humpback whale pairs have been seen in the past month, and a possible (but unconfirmed) Gray whale mother and calf pair may have been sighted March 23rd.

March 19: The northbound sightings are becoming more regular — small groups of 2-3 grey whales tracking steadily north. A very late start overall, as our first sighting of northbound whales on March 4th was about two weeks later than average.

March 4, 2008: Two grey whales observed traveling consistently north from Cleland Island to west of Sea Otter Rocks, headed towards Estevan Point. One of the two was quite a large grey whale, the other medium-sized.
