News from Observation Post #3
Laguna Ojo de Libre, Baja California, Mexico

Whale watch leader Keith Jones says Hola amigos Y amigas. He leads Baja Jones Adventures whale-watching tours inside Laguna Ojo de Liebre, one of the four nursery lagoons in Mexico. Keith reports the latest news:

February 6, 2008:
The official Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve and Mexican Fisheries gray whale census was taken yesterday at Laguna Ojo de Liebre. The count at that time: 560. I was unable to find out how many of those are babies, but based upon past experience, I would guess there between 100 and 200 babies were included in this count.

My personal feel for this season is that it is beginning later than normal, but the whales are coming in more frequently every day. I predict another year with the whale count at the peak time reaching about 1,500 to 1,800 and this "peak" time occurring around February 20, about one week later than normal. There is an increased chance that the gray whales' time down south will run later than normal as well. I expect a lot of whales will remain throughout March or at least through the first three weeks of March.
