Gray Whales (and many other Great Whales) were almost wiped off the Earth by whaling between the 1800s and the mid-1900s. Thanks to conservation efforts and new substitutions for whale oil and whale bone, whaling stopped. Gray Whales recovered enough to be taken off the endangered species list in 1994. In the spring of 2007, caring people gave the Gray Whale a tremendous gift: they raised enough money to purchase a large area of coastline surrounding its Mexican birthing lagoons to protect this land from development. Mrs. Black and her second graders at Rama Public School in Ontario, Canada wanted to help whales too. Here's what they said:
