Whooping Cranes for Kids Whooping Crane Home

The birds must be safe from predators AND from the older cranes who may return and claim this as their territory. The bottom of the pen is alligator-proofed with heavy wire screens. Electric fence wire discourages predators such as bobcats. At night, their caretakers lead the chicks into a top-netted area to protect them if older cranes come around to bully them. The top net is high enough so the chicks can still leap and jump. In 2008 a new gate was built to provide for their escape to safety in stormy weather.
