YES! At 7:48 a.m., the young whoopers took off in a perfect flight, leaving behind the stopover site where they spent five long days waiting for fly-able weather. All 16 flew behind Richard's ultralight until Brooke moved in halfway through to lend his wing to two birds that appeared to be dropping back or getting tired. The whole team arrived at 8:54 a.m. in Jackson County, Indiana. Today's flight added 41.7 miles, for a total of 433 statute miles.

You're Invited

Tomorrow morning, weather permitting, is the day when the public is invited to watch the cranes departure from Indiana and head into Kentucky! If you're lucky enough to live in the area, here are Heather's directions: Meet at 7 a.m. in the Sandhill Pond parking lot at Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge. Take Hwy 50 east out of Seymour, Indiana. Continue to Refuge main road and turn right (south). Carry on for 3.25 miles. Parking lot on right (west) side of road. If you go, we invite you to send your eye-witness report to share on this Web site!

Clip: Why cool air is best for flying

Tips

Try This! Journaling Questions
  • If they departed at 7:48 and landed at 8:54, how long was today's flight?
  • The sunny but cold (27.8F) temperatures and winds from the NNW at 5 mph were welcome flight conditions!  It may sound cold to you, but it's good for the birds and the planes. Hear Joe explain why in this video clip. Then list in your journal why cold air is best for flying.
