No Go. New Waiting Game Starts (+0 Miles)
November 16, 2009: Migration Day 32

Photo Operation Migration

Congratulations to Operation Migration! Yesterday they logged the landmark 10,000th air-mile in the Whooping crane reintroduction program. This is the equivalent of flying almost halfway around the world! Yesterday's celebration gives way to a day of rest in rainy LaSalle County. It feels terrific to have added another 55 miles, and this may be all the weather allows for the next few days. A new waiting game at a new stopover site begins, but we'll still have lots of discoveries for you to make.

In the Classroom

  • (a) Check this page and fill in the blank: With ___ days of flights with miles gained, the birds have flown ___ miles of their journey south.
  • (b-for-bonus) Illinois lies within the interior plains of the U.S. How does that geography make it a good state for the migration route? The main feature of northern Illinois is its largest city, which sprawls through much of the area. What city is it, and what concerns could its size and activity cause for the pilots? What city is the capital of Illinois?

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
