No Go: Winds and Warm Drizzle (+0 Miles)
October 30, 2009: Migration Day 15

The undependable autumn weather has caused down-day #3 in South Juneau County, Wisconsin. It's a good day for the costumes to enter the pen and give the birds their de-worming medicine, buried in smelts (tiny fish). The birds jumped and flapped like crazy today. Did you see it on the CraneCam? But it's also the day before Halloween, and you can be sure there are pumpkins! There's mischief too, as you'll see when you take a look at our new slide show story. Now, back to waiting out the weather. . .

The world's first CraneCam and TrikeCam give us a bird's eye view of this migration. Take a look!

In the Classroom

  • Today's Journal Question: (a) After yesterday's report, how does today's photo show that the team tries to keep the cranes from getting bored in the pen? (b-for-bonus) Brooke often says, "By far the most difficult thing about flying with the birds is NOT flying with the birds." What do you think he meant? What do you think are some difficulties on no-fly days?
  • Migration Math: What fraction of the 15 days have been fly days?

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
