Reading Strategies

Readers track the order of events described in a selection. Readers identify steps in a process, stages of development, phases of a cycle, etc. Clue words authors may use to help readers track sequence include: first, then, finally, last, while, during, and after.

Questions to help students track a sequence of events from written texts:

  • How did the author organize the information in this selection?
  • How would you use the events described in the text to create a timeline of events?
  • What words or phrases did the author use to help readers track the sequence of events: first, then, finally, next, last, while, during, after, dates, times.
  • This selection included information organized chronologically. What is the sequence of events described in the text?
