"We have an explosion of cicadas in our area! They are the 17-year cicadas and have been "shelling" out for two weeks now. In the morning we hear the hum of millions of cicadas in chorus!" Ruckersville, Virginia 05/22/13

This year will be remembered by many along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard for the emergence of a 17-year cicada. This cicada (Magicicada sp.) has a unique lifecycle. The juvenile phase spends 16 years underground before emerging to become adults. Their emergence is synchronized so during the months of May and June thousands will be visible. If you are looking for places to see the cicadas, visit this online map.
