Observations from Citizen Scientists: March 8-16, 2009

Read for details: What behaviors can help you know whether a robin is a local already home or a migrant passing through? Read these descriptions to see what clues you might find.

March 14: Port Hope, ON (43.95, -78.30)
It has been sunny & clear for a least a week. Yesterday (3/14) , during a walk on the golf course , which is right on the north side of lake Ontario, we spotted our 1st robin. All alone & obviously a migrator. . .Sunday morning , 2 males were fighting in the yard, staking their territory. So spring is here, I hope!!!>>

March 16: State College, PA (40.79, -77.84)
Room 32 students saw many robin sightings over our spring break. Brendan saw 5 robins at the park. Yeonho saw 1 robin at the park. Emma saw 1 robin at the zoo in Washington D.C. Timani saw 9 at her grandma's house. Seth saw 7 robins outside of his grandparents' house, eating worms. Drew saw 7 on his street. Meghan saw 15 robins in her yard all at the same time. Deshone saw a robin at school behind our playground when it was raining outside. Adam saw 2 robins at his house. Cade saw 17 robins at different times over the week at his house. Katie saw 1 robin outside. Asala saw 5 at an animal park in Connecticut. Abe saw 1 robin in his backyard. Kathleen saw a robin in a tree at her house. >>

March 14: Pikesville, MD (39.37, -76.72)
I saw about 30 in the back yard today. Wonder if they are migrating. >>

March 8: Charlotte, VT (44.31, -73.22)
Very strong south winds blew all day and what should appear on the lawn at my brother's house but a wave of migrating robins. There were over two dozen and all were feeding busily in the grass. They did not spread out across the meadow but stayed on the area that's mowed as lawn in the summer where the grass is shorter. I heard several singing but it was a very muted song, not the clear song they'll sing when they reach their breeding territories.>>
