A Monthly Reminder to Go Outside!

Monarchs are "flying in from every direction" to roost, say observers in the Midwest. Students in the north report the first chilly frosts. What clues in your home town tell you that fall is approaching? Look, smell, feel, and listen carefully.

Once each month, take a few minutes to go outside and record the changes you see. Begin on September 23, the Fall Equinox, (or as close as you can). Go outside exactly one month later and see how things have changed. We'll send a monthly reminder.

Outdoor Observations for September

Use a Fall Phenology Checklist to record your findings. Pay close attention to the hours of sunlight (photoperiod). Changing sunlight from month to month is the basis for all other seasonal changes!

What is Phenology?

Phenology is the study of the seasonal timing of life cycle events. For instance, in the fall, animals migrate or hibernate and plants die or go dormant. The timing of these events is affected by day length, temperature, and rainfall.
