Phenology Data Exchange
Using nature's clues, can you find your partner?

Phenology Data Exchange Reminder: September 14, 2001

Today's Update Includes:

Collect Your Data on the Fall Equinox!
Saturday, September 22, is the Fall (Autumnal) Equinox--and a day to collect observations listed on your Fall Phenology Checklist.

Collect the following information listed on your Fall Phenology Checklist:
  • Astronomical Data--Photoperiod & length of shadow at noon
  • Meterological Data--Temperatures (the day's high, low & average)
  • Phenological Data--Review the Fall Checklist and note the changes in animals, plants and other living things.

Stick Around!
If you don't do anything else--measure the sun's shadow! You will be amazed at the changes in sunlight we're about to experience. "Stick around" and try this lesson:

Link Your Class with a Global Partner
This year, over 6,000 classrooms across North America will embark on the Journey South/Journey North adventure. If you haven't participated before, here's a little background--there are countless ways students can exchange information and friendship with their global classmates.

The Phenology Data Exchange
Each month, carefully observe the seasonal changes outlined on the Phenology Checklist. Then pair up with a partner class and exchange the information you have collected. Using nature's clues, can you find your partner?

Shhhh·It's a Secret
Rather than tell your students where your partner school is located, keep this a secret. Challenge your students to use nature's clues to find their partner.

Here's How: Visit the Journey North Classroom Exchange to post your name and to find your own partner class. The Exchange is already open with classrooms around the country waiting to exchange data.

Looking for a Partner?
There are now 49 classrooms ready to exchange data. If you haven't contacted a partner yet, here's a list of teachers below who are interested in participating or visit the Classroom Exchange.

Important: Do not report your data to Journey North. Remember that the Phenology Data Exchange is designed so that paired schools can exchange data. (You are welcome to report "Spring Nature Notes" about interesting observations you've made in your area, but understand that this is not the place to share data with your partner.)
