Fall Activity #5

Join the Community

Overview

Build a sense of community between your students and thousands of others across North America who are united by monarch migration and are participating in the Symbolic Migration.

Note: This activity should be done after you send your butterfly to Mexico.

Activity

1. Put Your Class on the Map

Show your place in the international monarch community by posting to Journey North’s Symbolic Migration map.

a. Brainstorm: First, brainstorm ideas for international cooperation and conservation of monarch habitat. Help students draft the class message by discussing these questions:

  • How is monarch habitat in our region important?
  • What can we do for habitat conservation?
  • How can people across North America cooperate to protect monarchs and their habitat?

b. Post Your Message to the Map: Introduce your class and share messages.

Reporting Form: Add to the Map

Your school will appear on the map to show your place in the international community united by monarch butterflies. Children everywhere can meet and communicate with you.

Suggestions:

Include a Picture: Share a picture of the ambassador butterfly you created. If your school permits,  include a picture of your class.

Write in Spanish too, if you can!  Draft from these sample Spanish phrases.

2. Meet Members of the Monarch Community

Visit often to see when and where new people join the community. Communicate with other classrooms, find partner schools, and share ideas and friendship.
