Our tour spotted Gray Whales outside of Resurrection Bay on Friday, April 12, 2013. Captain Nicole Lawrence, Crew and guests aboard the M/V Viewfinder watched passing Gray Whales for approx. 20 minutes on Friday afternoon.
We did see the Gray Whales also on Saturday, April 13th, just outside of Resurrection Bay again. The area of travel is their basic path to the feeding grounds, but the captain specifically indicated on Friday that a pair of Gray Whales were viewed from Cape Resurrection traveling past the south point of Rugged Island, headed towards Cape Aialik. On Saturday, approx 5 Gray Whales were spotted in the same areas at different times.
According to the Captains, this season appears to be later than normal. Last season was not very good for Gray Whale sightings due mostly to the weather and sea conditions during the spring, however two years ago was one of the best seasons for Gray Whale sightings on record at Major Marine Tours; the weather that season was wonderful, and the sightings plentiful, but they were mostly in late April, early May.
