Plants
and the Seasons
The International Tulip Garden Study
Background
Students
explore seasonal change by watching plant growth in their own gardens--and
in gardens across the hemisphere.
Plant
an Official Journey North Garden!
The
International Tulip study teaches the rules students must follow
to run a proper experiment. Gardens must be planted according
to scientific protocol.
This
study supports scientific observations, data collection, and student-directed
inquiry.
Students learn the importance of establishing and following a scientific
protocol.
Try
Planting an Experimental Garden, too!
Experimental garden plots can help
students answer their own questions. They
can vary the official planting protocol, design their own protocol,
and see what happens.
Track
Spring's Journey North
As reports for official gardens arrive, students
can track the wave of spring using data sent by individual classrooms.
Predictions are an important part of the inquiry process.
Students begin to understand the relationship between climate, weather
and plant life as they monitor conditions and adjust predictions
for when the tulips will emerge and bloom.
When tulips finally emerge and bloom students announce that
spring has arrived in their part of the world. "We have emergence over here...check
it out!"
