Spyhop: Why Does a Whale Do This?

Photo Adrienne Deliso, Baja Ecotours

The gray whale has one eye on either side of its head. Because its eyes are spaced this way, a whale has has monocular vision: one eye at a time, just like a cow. When a whale comes up from a dive, it spyhops to get a look at its surroundings. The whale might come up, do a ballerina spin, take a look around, and dive again. Wouldn't that be fun?
