An Ultralight Pilot's Survival Kit

This Ultralight Pilot's Survival Kit was found in pilot Joe Duff's emergency kit. Would you believe that all these items fit into a sardine-sized tin?

Joe has had the kit for 20 years. He never had to open it so he doesn't really know if all the items are actually inside the kit or not. Now Joe might be thinking about how he would use each item. We hope he'll never have to!

Journal or Discussion Questions:

  • How do you think each item listed could be helpful?
  • Choose 5 of these items that you consider most valuable. Imagine yourself in a situation where you need the items. Describe the situation and how you used the survival items. Share stories among friends.
  • Do you or your family have any type of survival kit? What kind? (A winter survival kit for the car? A boy/girl scout fire-start kit? A camping camping kit?
  • Create your own survival box for a situation you or your family might face. What would you put into it?
