Are they adults or juveniles? How do you know?

These are adult Whooping Cranes. Only adults have the red crowns on their heads. The red is not feathers, but bare skin. The color gets lighter red or darker red, depending upon the crane's mood and what is happening around it. What do you suppose these cranes are looking at? Could danger be near?
