Rufous Hummers Move Inland

What is the green near the western coast of Washington (lower elevations)? It's trees and other plants! The white in Washington and Idaho is snow high in the Cascades and other mountain ranges.

The higher the elevation, the colder the temperatures. Less plant nectar and fewer insects are available for hungry hummers. But as the mountains warm and snows melt in the spring, Rufous hummers spread out to feed on the loads of wildflowers in these high habitats. (More on temperature and elevation. >>)
