What Can You Learn from Observers?

(Back to Today's Update - 5/3/07)

What can you learn about hummingbirds and their migration based on what observers report? Read this week's highlights, then discuss or write responses to the "Think" question.

Wyckoff, New Jersey: Yeah! A male hummer at feeder around 5:00 pm took a real long drink. I don't think he will stay. The first ones usually don't, but it's nice to know they are around!

Englehart, Ontario, Canada: A ruby-throated hummingbird was inspecting painted flowers on birdhouses.

Villas, New Jersey: Early morning, I looked out and saw the hummer visiting the blossoms of the "money flower." He hovered over the azealas, that were not quite opened. Later, we saw him on the apple tree that was in blossom. What an awesome site!

Think: What did you learn about ruby-throated hummingbirds? List 2 things. What do you wonder?

Think: Based on what people are saying, how would you describe how a hungry hummingbird acts?

[OR:
Think: What do the comments "tell" you about how ruby-throated hummingbirds are adapted to survive?]
