Whale Watching: News From Observation Posts >>

Big news! A mom and calf were seen at Narrow Cape, Alaska on April 30! Hungry gray whales are seriously plowing north. There was excitement in Newport, Oregon (#9) when Pam at Captain's Reel Deep Sea Fishing Charters saw more whales at one time than ever before. "They were all around the boat," exclaimed Pam. "Spouts were going up everywhere!"

It's now May, and very few whales remain in the lagoons. But in April they were still thrilling observers at Laguna San Ignacio (#2). Guide/naturalist Carolina tells of "at least 18 pairs of mothers with their calves right between our 4 pangas!" Like most of the the whales by now, Carolina has gone north too, but today she shares final stories from recent weeks.

Meanwhile, calf numbers are low at both California ACS counting stations (#5 and #6). "Last year at this time, we had counted 75 calves. Today we saw our 22nd calf of 2007," reported Michael at the Gray Whales Count Station on April 21.
Counting at Pt. Piedras Blancas, CA (#7) is Wayne Perryman, the government's leading expert on gray whale moms and babies. He says "This is currently the 4th slowest year for calves." Are the babies and moms just late? We'll have our final news in two more weeks, when both ACS stations will be done for the season. Stay tuned!

Wonder: Any Shut-eye Along the Way? Lesson: >>

Gray whales travel 24 hours a day. We wonder…

  • Could they possibly make their 10,000-mile migration without any rest or sleep?
  • How do whales sleep if they must be conscious to breathe?

For many years, scientists were unsure about these questions. They are learning more, but lots of questions still remain. Dig in and discover if and how migrating whales sleep! >>

Journal: How is a Whale's Sleep Like Your Sleep?

Scientists have discovered that a gray whale can rest or sleep in three ways, but there is still a lot we don't know about whale sleep! View our slide show:
