THANK YOU, WHALE WATCHERS, FOR SHARING YOUR DATA! This (2005) was the first year a census of migrating gray whales was conducted at the Channel Islands location, and we were thrilled that they shared their data with us. Journey North THANKS Research Director Michael H. Smith and the many dedicated ACS volunteers who showed up 100 days to count the migrating gray whales. For some, it was their first experience with whales. The American Cetacean Society, Channel Islands created the mandate and rounded up the support to carry out this census. The University of California, Santa Barbara, through the Coal Oil Point Natural Reserve, gave ACS-CI the Point from which the data were gathered. We are grateful to them all, and to the captains and crew of the Condor Express. They all helped Journey North students to share in this glimpse of the great gray whales on their migration trail!
