Diary of Eagle Activity at the Bait Site
by Chris Martin, Conservation Biologist, New Hampshire Audubon

1/31/08
We placed one small never-frozen deer on the bank of the Merrimack below trees where eagles were occasionally perching. Immature eagles seen perched over the bait but 8 days later there were no signs the bait was eaten.

I placed another two small, never-frozen carcasses together in the field above the river bank. Moved a hay bale (rocket net box substitute) nearby and placed an eagle decoy on bale. No sign of scavenging these carcasses on 2/8.

1/31/08
I place another eagle decoy on the hay bale near the main bait pile. (Coyotes have found this bait pile and enjoying the free food.

2/04/08
I visit the site and see a minimum of 4 eagles perching close by, and a total of 6 or 7 seen in course of few hours.

2/08/08
We had minimum of 4 eagles in the area in about 2 hours. The night roost site downriver continues to have nightly attendance of 4-8 birds.
