V98 on capture day, 03/09/04

Unfortunately, it appears that we may have lost contact with V98, originally captured in NY 9 March 2004, just about three years ago now. Our last, good signal for her was on 13 February, still from southern Quebec (Canada) near the St. Lawrence River; she never did make it farther south into New York. As is usually the case, we don't know exactly what has become of V98. She carries a satellite radio powered by a battery (versus a solar-powered unit that the other eagles being tracked carry) which is now near it's operational life span of 3-years, so it is possible that the unit died.

However, what is suspicious, is that the temperature reading of the unit (data that also comes with the signal) was indicating around 68 degrees F when last transmitting, which seems awfully warm for mid-February in Canada - almost the indoor temperature of a house --- hmmm. We'll probably never know.

For each of these birds, you might find it interesting to look at last year's data and see how the locations might have changed for similar dates from one year to the next and think about what this might demonstrate.
