April 6, 2001
This is the answer to Challenge Question #15 from Mrs. Dempsey's Class,
Charlotte Dunning School, Framingham, MA. :
What is a bud?
One step that comes before a flower and after a seed.
A folded up flower blossom.
The bud is important because the bud turns into the real flower.
After the flower has blossoms that wilt, the ovaries will start to
provide new life for new flowers by producing seeds.
(The last sentence above is really a quote from a second grader,
althought I know it is hard to believe. We have been studying plant
parts with an amaryllis and they have been observing the swelling of the
ovary as it forms a seedhead. A.D)
Survival of the bud even though frozen:
Maybe because the bud is surrounded by fleshy leaves, it might not be
as frozen. Since the bud is inside the bulbs, maybe it is a little
warmer. It also has the skin to protect it.
Maybe the bulb is covered with ice but it is protecting it.
It is like freezer burn. It thaws and becomes a regular bulb again when
