I think that baby hummers have such big beaks
so that the mother can feed them. If their
beaks are not big enough she will not be able
to fit her beak into theirs. The babies are
competing for food and it creates a bigger
target if their mouths are open wide. It is
also a reason for the parent to keep feeding
the baby birds.
