Next message: Pam Boyle: "CHALLENGE QUESTION # 27"
Dear Journey North,
Challenge Question #35
"When might we expect monarchs to emerge in Arkansas?"
This was a fun question to work on. First, we looked at the migration map
for the week and found that the Monarchs in Arkansas had arrived
between March 15 - 28th and March 29 - April ll. Next we added 20 days to
March 15 to figure the earliest new generation emerging date. This date
is April 4th. Then, we added 32 days, the longest development time, to
the March 15th date. This gave us April 16th. So, for the Monarchs
arriving between March 15 and March 28 in Arkansas, the new generation of
Monarchs would emerge between April 4 and April 16.
We did the same thing for the Monarch arriving between March 29 and April
ll. The new generation of Monarchs would emerge from April 18 to May 13
for this group.
We are anxiously awaiting the sighting of Monarchs here in Maryland. We
hope they don't come too soon, because we've checked two milkweed sites
and have found the Milkweed is not growing yet. We are hoping to buy more
milkweed at a nursery and plant it next week so our Monarchs will have
something to eat and someplace to lay their eggs.
