  • Tulip Garden Update: May 9, 199

Carol Gersmehl and Andy Berger, Macalester College
This week's big news: Spring has arrived in Anchorage, Alaska! According to Mike Sterling's class, tulips finally emerged on May 5th. On the same day, Grade 4 students in Harvey Station, New Brunswick ( 45.72 N, 67.00 W) discovered tulips in their garden, though ice damage had taken its toll after the long winter. AND in Alberta on May 5th, "Tulips have finally begun to bloom in the east end of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Today was the first day that students reported seeing blooming tulips " Reported George Dame School (George_Dame@mouse.edmonton.ab.ca).

Here's the latest news reported recently from other gardeners:

What about the Journey North garden in Finland? Has spring arrived there yet?

"Our tulip garden is still under heavy snow, about 1 meter today (May 7th). We have daylight 3.15 -23.07, that makes about 20 hours, which is wonderful after the dark period. The last few days have been very cloudy and it has been snowing again.

"The daytime temperature is about + 5C (40 F), at night some minus degrees (ca 25 F). Birds like rough-legged buzzards, snow buntings and gulls are here but we still have to wait for the green leaves for weeks.

"We are preparing for the breaking out of the ice in the River Teno. We arrange ice-out betting every spring. It costs 20 Fim (about 4 $) to bet the exact date and time (hour and minute) when it will happen. There is a special signal pole, which crosses the traditional line. The winner gets a river boat and the money collected goes to school trips.

    Best regards,

Maybe the tulips will have finally emerged in Finland in time for our final update! Or maybe not. Sixth grade students at Forrest Elementary School, in Manitoba, Canada make this prediction:

"We think the tulips in Utsjoki, Finland will bloom around July 9. We think this because we found out about the soils in northern Finland and we knew there is about 7 months when snow is on the ground."
Grade 6 Class, Forrest Elementary School
    Forrest, Manitoba, Canada.

Our final update will be posted in 2 weeks, on May 23rd. As the school year draws to a close, we want thank you all for contributing! We hope you'll join us again next year. In the meantime, we will appreciate your ideas for improvements in next year's project. Please send your suggestions to us at: jnorth@learner.org

Watch for planting instructions in late August. During the summer, we hope to identify several garden supply companies who carry the proper bulbs, so finding them won't be as difficult next fall. Again, thank you for making this study such a great success! We look forward to hearing from you.
