Oriole Migration Update: May 22, 1997

If you thought orioles were plentiful in our May 8th update, wait until you see the data today! In the past 2 weeks, 71 more orioles have been reported. (Thanks to Ontario student Elaina Ricchetti for providing this great oriole illustration. Nice work, Elaina!)

  • Which oriole is the farthest north?
  • When was the first oriole spotted in Canada?
  • In how many new states and provinces have orioles been sighted since our May 8th update? In how many states and provinces have they been sighted in total?
  • Have orioles now been sighted throughout their entire breeding range? If not, how much further north do you expect them to go?
  • To which of the following biomes do you think these orioles will migrate? The boreal forest? The arctic tundra? Why?

It's Almost Nesting Time!
Orioles will soon be building their nests. Woven together with plant fiber strips, their nests hang from high limbs like a hammock. You can provide nesting material for them. Simply cut regular string into pieces no more than 6 inches long, and place them outside. You'll soon see the female flying off with the string, which she'll weave into the nest. (When the leaves are gone next fall you may see your string high in the tree limb.) Good luck!

When Do Orioles Migrate?
This is our final oriole update of the season. Now that the migration is drawing to a close, how would you summarize oriole migration based on this spring's data?

Pull together all the migration data from each previous report. Then count the number of oriole sightings reported during each 3-day time interval, and record the number on the chart below. Finally, make a graph to help you visualize the data.

  • During which time interval were the most orioles reported?
  • How do you interpret this?
  • Can you correlate these trends with any weather patterns?
  • Consider how the data were collected. What factors might influence the number of orioles reported?
  • What other conclusions can you draw based on these data?
  • Will orioles migrate at the same time next year? We hope you'll join us again next spring and find out!
