    The data below were collected on the whale watch vessel "Rachel G. Whale" between March 10th and April 21st. What can you tell us about gray whale migration past Santa Barbara, California during this time period?

    At first glance, you may not see anything but numbers. But the more you look at the data, patterns will begin to emerge. Remember, you are looking at "raw data". This term is used to describe data that have not yet been analyzed or interpreted. When raw data are arranged into charts and tables they are usually easier to understand.

    Date: 3-10-97 Time: 1615 Location: 34.22.95/119.52.94 approx. 1 1/2 miles off Coal Oil Point in 209 feet of water. It took a while, but finally found a pod of 4 Whales. It was 2 cows with juveniles traveling together. Friendly Whales with great Fluke Shots. Passengers very excited.

    Date: 3-11-97 Time: 1045 Location: 34.19.40/119.37.53 approx. 1/2 mile off of oil platform B in 225 feet of water. Headed west and was called by crew boat Murdoc Tides of Whales location and went east to oil platforms. Found single adult Whale. Excellent sightings. Very friendly and swam over to boat for a people watch. School kids went wild. What a great marine experience for the kids.

    Date: 3-11-97 Time: 1225 Location: 34.22.00/119.43.57 approx. 1.8 miles off SB Lighthouse. One adult Whale. Not very friendly and gave us the old whale slip.

    Date: 3-11-97 Time: 1350 Location: 34-24-66/119.37.08 approx. .4 miles off of Summerland in 36 feet of water. Single juvenile. At first very shy with light spouts and lots of snorkling. Then the Whale became more than friendly. It came over to the boat and swam along side as if to say hi. But it decided that wasn't good enough so it breached 8 times in a row. We all decided this Whales deserved a standing ovation. Super sighting. Breathing cycle every 3 minutes.

    Date: 3-11-97 Time: 1531 Location: did not write down lat & long but was approx. .5 miles off Hendrys Beach in 97 feet of water. Found 3 Whales. 2 Adults with juvenile. Traveling at 5 mph. Breathing cycle every 6 1/2 minutes. Lots of Flukes.

    Date: 3-12-97 Time: 1256 Location: 34-21-76/119-51-16 approx. 5 1/2 miles off UCSB in 285 feet of water. Speed 3 mph. Found a pod of 7 Whales traveling together as one big happy family. Extremely friendly animals and swam along side the Rachel G. Lots of great Fluke shots. Sound effects were unbelievable. While traveling with the whales, a school of about 250 Common Dolphins joined the Whales along with several schools of want to be dolphins, Sea Lions. This was one of the best trips to date. Breathing cycle less than 2 minutes.

    Date: 3-12-97 Time: 1514 Location: 34-24-64/119-38-87 approx. .2 miles off the Biltmoe Hotel in 41 feet of water. Found 3 juvenile Whales swimming together. Another great sighting. These Whales thought they were dolphins and rode our bow wake. Lots of flukes. Speed 5 mph. Breathing cycle 4 minutes.

    Date: 3-13-97 Time: 1000 Location: approx. 1 3/4 miles off Stearns Wharf in 165 feet of water. Found 7 whales in 3 pods. Very active with lots of flukes.

    Date: 3-13-97 Time: 1340 Location: approx. 1 mile off More Mesa in 140 feet of water. Found very friendly juvenile.

    Date: 3-13-97 Time: 1700 Location: approx. 1/2 mile off Hendrys Beach in 75 feet of water. Found a pod of 5 Whales. Very active with lots of flukes. Sorry, new captain forgot to write down lats & longs for the above sightings.

    Date: 3-14-97 Time: 1035 Location: 34-27-19/119-42-80 approx. 1/2 mile off Shoreline park in 90 feet of water. Found 2 juveniles. Great show! Lots of flukes and whales swam along side boat. Speed 3 1/2 mph. Breathing cycle every 3 minutes.

    Date: 3-14-97 Time: 1615 Location: 34-24-01/119-53-60 approx. 1.2 miles off UCSB in 127 feet of water. Found cow and juvenile. Speed 4 mph. Breathing cycle 5 1/2 minutes.

    Date: 3-15-97 Time: 1230 Location: 34-23-56/119-49-30 approx. 1.5 miles off Goleta Pier. Found a pod of 3 whales. Mating group? Lots of flukes and service action. Speed 5 mph. Breathing cycle every 4 minutes.

    Date: 3-15-97 Time: 1525 Location: 34-22-26/119-42-86 approx. 1.6 miles off Shoreline Park. Found 2 adult whales. Some flukes. Speed 8 mph. Breathing cycle 7 minutes.

    Date: 3-15-97 Time: 1605 Location: 34-22-94/119-47-81 approx. 2 miles off More Mesa in 200 feet of water. Founds 2 whales. Not the best sighting.

    Date: 3-16-97 Time: 1031 Location: 34-23-90/119-39-50 approx. 1.2 miles off Summerland in 94 feet of water. Whale watching at its best. Found 2 extremely friendly juveniles. Lots of flukes, bow riding, & barrow rolls. We felt we were at Sea World. These whales really put on a show. Speed 4 mph. Breathing cycle 2 minutes.

    Date: 3-16-97 Time: 1230 Location: 1/2 mile oof Hendrys beach. Same Whales as above and same great show.

    Date: 3-16-97 Time: 1710 Location: 34-26-01/119-51-10 approx. 1.6 miles off Goleta in 220 feet of water. Found single adult whale. Lots of flukes. Speed 6 mph. Breathing cycle 5 minutes.

    Date: 3-17-97 Time: 1315 Location: 34-24-00/119-45-39 approx. .4 miles off Hope Ranch in 45 feet of water. Single juvenile whale. Some flukes. Speed: 4 1/2 mph. Breathing cycle 3 1/2 minutes. Very Friendly. Enjoyed company. Also found a school of Bottle Nose Porpoise along kelp line.

    Date: 3-17-97 Time: 1415 Location: 34-23-53/119-42-40 approx. 300 yards off Shoreline Park in 23 feet of water. Single juvenile whale. Speed 5 mph. Breathing cycle 3 minutes. Young whale swimming in and around kelp line, just like its mother taught it. What a great sight.

    Date: 3-18-97 Time: 1220 Location: 34-21-88/119-42-23 approx. 1.8 miles off More Mesa in 208 feet of water. Found a pod of 3 whales. Very active on surface. Whales rolling on their sides with pectral fins out of water. This was x-rated whale watching. Green milky water around mating zone. In 13 months, here comes junior.

    Date: 3-18-97 Time: 1353 Location: 34-23-00/119-43-47 approx. .7 miles off Santa Barbara point in 142 feet of water. Found a pod of 4 Whales. Lots of flukes. Speed 6 mph. Breathing cycle 5 1/2 minutes.

    Date: 3-18-97 Time: 1515 Location: 34-23-51/119-43-61 approx. .3 miles off of Soreline Park in 30 feet of water. Found single juvenile whale swimming in and out of the kelp. Very friendly, swam alond side boat.

    Date: 3-18-97 Time: 1650 Location: 34-22-24/119/39-15 approx. 2.7 miles off Stearn Wharf in 171 feet of water. Found 8 whales in 3 pods. Whales all around the boat. Whales to the left, whales to the right, whales to the front, and whales to the back. What a show! It ended when a whale breached 3 times 50 feet from the boat. WOW!!!!!!!!!!

    Date: 3-19-97 Time: 0925 Location: 34-23-68/119-40-83 approx. 1.3 miles off Stearns Wharf in 67 feet of water. Found a pod of 4 whales. Lots of flukes and surface activity. Speed 4 knots. Breathing cycle 5 minutes.

    Date: 3-19-97 Time: 1056 Location: 34-23-57/119-44-18 approx. 1/2 mile off Wilcox Property in 46 feet of water. Found 1 adult whale. Speed 6 knots. Breathing cycle 6 1/2 minutes. Lots of big spouts and surface activity.

    Date: 3-19-97 Time: 1115 Location: 34-23-29/119-42-37 approx. .9 miles off Shoreline Park in 62 feet of water. Found a pod of 3 Whales. Lots of flukes and surface activity. Speed 5 1/2 knots. Breathing cycle 5 minutes.

    Date: 3-19-97 Time:1302 Location: 34-22-52/119-51-07 approx. 1 3/4 miles off UCSB in 214 feet of water. Found a pod of 4 Whales. Great sighting. Very friendly! Lots of flukes. Whales swam along side of boat. Speed 4.2 knots. Breathing cycle 2 1/2 minutes.

    date: 3-19-97 Time: 1345 Location: 34-23-77/119-49-98 approx. .9 miles o ff UCSB in 144 feet of water. Found 2 Whales. Speed 6 knots. Breathing cycle 6 1/2 minutes. Whales on a mission. Some surface activity. No Flukes.

    Date: 3-19-97 Time: 1414 Location: 34-23-40/119.47-95 approx. 1.8 miles off More Mesa in 159 feet of water. Found 3 Whales. Speed 4 knots. Breathing cycle 4 1/2 minutes. Lots of spouts but no flukes.

    Date: 3-19-97 Time: 1431 Location: 34-23-33/119-44-64 approx. .7 miles off Wilcox Property in 104 feet of water. Found 2 Whales. Staying on surface and not appearing to go anywhere. Seem to be hanging around for their buddies. Who knows? Great sighting on the surface. No speed and really no breathing cycle. Had to leave for next departure.

    Date: 3-20-97 Time: 1226 Location: 34-23-61/119-43-61approx. 500 yards off S.B. Lighthouse in 38 feet of water. Found a adult whale. Speed 4 1/2 knots. Breathing cycle every 3 minutes. Semi spy-hopping. Lots of big spouts. No flukes.

    Date: 3-20-97 Time: 1414 Location: 34-23-56/119-41-45 approx. .7 miles of S.B. Breakwater in 53 feet of water. Found 3 adult whales. Lots of great flukes and surface action. Very friendly animals. Speed 3.7 knots. Breathing cycle 4 minutes.

    Date: 3-20-97 Time: 1645 Location: 34-23-50/119-39-67 approx. 1.3 miles off Stearns Wharf in 80 feet of water. Found 3 adult whales. Speed 5 knots. Breathing cycle every 4 minutes. Lots of great flukes.

    Date: 3-21-97 Time: 0925 Location: 34-23-93/119-45-13 approx. 700 yards off Hope Ranch in 43 feet of water. Found 2 adults whales. Speed 4 knots. Breathing cycle every 4 minutes. Very friendly animals. Located small school of Common Dolphins. Lots of bow riding.

    Date: 3-21-97 Time: 1219 Location: 1.2 miles off Stearn Wharf in 62 feet of water. Found 2 juvenile whales. Speed 3.5 knots. Breathing cycle every 2 1/2 minutes. Friendly animals. Some flukes and big spouts. Lots of Sea Lions.

    Date: 3-21-97 Time: 1355 Location: 34-23-35/119-43-09 approx. 1/2 mile off S.B Lighthouse in 53 feet of water. Found 2 adult whales. Speed 3.5 knots. Breathing cycle every 4 1/2 minutes. Lots of flukes. Few Sea lions.

    Date: 3-22-97 Time: 1001 Location: 34-23-29/119-52-28 approx. 1.3 miles of Isla Vista in 183 feet of water. Found a pod of 7 whales. Super sighting. Very friendly animals. Lots of flukes and surface activity. Speed 3 knots. Breathing cycle every 4 1/2 minutes.

    Date: 3-22-97 Time: 1319 Location: 34-23-19/119-51-65 approx. 1.3 miles off UCSB in 184 feet of water. Found one whale. Very shy. Some flukes from a distance. Capt. Ron Hart of the Condor found a large school of Common Dolphins and called us over to view them.

    Date: 3-22-97 Time: 1426 Location: 34-23-13/119-47-72 approx. 1.8 miles off Hope Ranch in 178 feet of water. Found one adult whale. Great sighting. Whale breached 10 times 300 yards from boat. Speed 4 knots. Breathing cycle every 4 minutes. This whale woke us all up.

    Date: 3-22-97 Time: 1555 Location: 34-23-50/119-43-12 approx. 700 yards off Shoreline Park in 38 feet of water. Found one very shy juvenile.

    Date: 3-22-97 Time: 1621 Location: 34-23-88/119-4086 approx. 1.2 miles off Stearns Wharf in 53 feet of water. Found a pod of 4 whales. Lots of flukes and surface activity. One of the whales breached two times. Several schools of Cal Sea Lions. Speed 4.3 knots. Breathing cycle every 3 1/2 minutes.

    Date: 3-23-97 Time: 1219 Location: 34-23-19/119-42-04 approx. .6 miles off Shoreline Park in 102 feet of water. Found 2 whales. Speed 5 knots. Breathing cycle every 4 minutes. One whale breached one time. Lots of flukes.

    Date: 3-23-97 Time: 1555 Location: 34-22-09/119-48-95 approx. 2.9 miles off More Mesa in 255 feet ofwater. Found a pod of 6 whales. Lots of great fluke shots and very friendly animals. Speed 5 knots. Breathing cycle every 4 minutes. Fun pod of whales.

    Date: 3-24-97 Time: 1604 Location: 34-23-56/119-43-90 approx. .3 mile off shore in 37 feet of water. Shy whale. Found feeding off bottom. Large area of bubbles and dirty water while whale was down.

    Date: 3-24-97 Time: 1530 Location: 34-23-00/119-45-24 approx. 1.8 miles off shore in 215 feet of water. Lots of surface activity and flukes. Found a pod of 5 whales. Speed: 5 knots. Breathing cycle every 6 minutes:

    Date: 3-25-97 Time: 1030 Location: 34-24-55/119-47-05 approx. .4 miles off Hope Ranch in 35 feet of water. Found 1 juvenile whale. Speed 3 knots. Breathing cycle every 2 minutes. Swimming very slowly and friendly. Performed a 100 % verticle spy hop and many semi spy hops. Lots of flukes. We had on 120 kids from McDonalds and Capt. Don's adopt a school program. KEYT NEWS did a great job covering the trip.

    Date: 3-25-97 Time: 1100 Location: 34-23-48/119/43/52 approx. .3 miles off SB Lighthouse in 48 feet of water. Found 2 juveniles and what a show . One whales breached 4 times. Lots of flukes. Same adopt a school kids on board. They came off the boat with a new feeling about their ocean enviroment. That's what its all about, hands on education.

    Date: 3-25-97 Time: 1630 Location: 34-22-23/119-53-32 approx. 2.6 miles off Plat Form Holly in 214 feet of water. Found 1 adult whale. Very shy. Not a good sighting. Left it and moved on.

    Date: 3-25-97 Time: 1730 Location: 34-23-23/119-47-37 approx. 2 miles off More Mesa in 191 feet of water. Found a pod of 3 whales. Speed 6 knots. Breathing cycle every 3 minutes. Great flukes. Noticed one of the whales had a large bump next to it twin blow hole. Looked like a cyst the size of a trash can. Very strange. Keep track of this one. Ask about sightings of this whale north of us.

    Date: 3-26-97 Time: 1310 Location: 34-23-84/119-51-87 approx. .8 miles off UCSB in 122 feet of water. Found 2 whales. Lots of flukes. Speed: 4 1/2 knots. Breathing cycle: every 3 1/2 minutes.

    Date: 3-26-97 Time: 1430 Location: 34-24-55/119-41-04 approx. 1/8 mile of SB Breakwater in 44 feet of water. Took everyone by surprise. Whale breached 4 times and was swimming with Bottle Nose Dolphins. Speed: 3 1/2 knots. Breathing cycle: Every 2 minutes.

    Date: 3-26-97 Time: 1530 Location: 34-24-56/119-23-23 approx. .4 miles from shore in 35 feet of water. Found a pod of 3 whales. Speed 4 knots. Breathing cycle: Every 2 minutes. Friendly animals. Stayed on the surface and swam like dolphins.

    Date: 3-26-97 Time: 1640 Location: 34-23-75/119-44-78 approx. .4 miles of Hendrys Beach in 58 feet of water. Found 2 adult whales. Lots of great flukes. Swimming rather fast, but still friendly. Speed: 6 1/2 knots. Breathing cycle: every 6 minutes. Also, found a school of Bottle Nose Dolphins.

    Date: 3-27-97 Time: 1230 Location: 1 mile off Stearns Wharf in 77 feet of water. Found a lone juvenile. Friendly animal and lots of little flukes. Speed: 3 1/2 knots. Breathing cycle: every 3 minutes.

    Date: 3-27-97 Time: 1401 Location: 1 1/2 miles off east end of Hope Ranch (sorry, our GPS acting up. No Lat of Log) in 150 feet of water. Found 2 adult whales. Lots of super flukes and one of the whales breached 4 times, WOW!. Speed3 1/2 knots. Breathing cycle: every 3 minutes.

    Date: 3-27-97 Time: 1615 Location: 1 1/2 miles off Santa Barbara Point in 150 of water. Found 2 very shy whales. Speed: 6 knots. Breathing cycle: every 7 minutes.

    Date: 3-37-97 Time: 1006 Location: 34-23-66/119-51-76 approx. .8 miles off UCSB in 140 feet off water. Found a pod of 3 whales. Appeared to be a mating pod with lots of surface action and flukes. Speed: 5 Knots Breathing cycle: every 6 1/2 minutes.

    Date: 3-28-97 Time: 1215 Location: 34-23-23/119-43-14 approx. 500 feet off SB Point in 50 feet of water. Found 2 juvenile whales swimming through the kelp forest. Speed: 4 knots. Breathing cycle: every 3 1/2 minutes.

    Date: 3-28-97 Time: 1520 Location: 34-23-24/119-43-23 approx. .8 miles off shore in 77 feet of water. Found 2 adult whales. Lots of flukes. Speed: 5 knots. Breathing cycle: every 4 1/2 minutes.

    Date: 3-28-97 Time: 1550 Location: 34-23-24/119-45-24 approx. 1 mile off Stearns Wharf in 77 feet of water. Found a pod of 3 whales. Not real friendly. Some flukes. Speed: 6 knots. Breathing cycle: every 6 minutes.

    Date: 3-28-97 Time: 1640 Location: 34-23-01/119-43-28 approx. .8 miles off SB Point in 135 of water. Found a pod of 3 adult whales moving very slowly. Lots of great flukes. Speed: 2 minutes. Breathing cycle: every 6 minutes.

    Date: 3-28-97 Time: 1700 Location: 34-23-35/119-42-12 approx. .5 miles off SB Point in 56 of water. Found 2 whales. Speed: 4 knots. Breathing cycle: every 4 minutes. No flukes. Lots of big spouts.

    Date: 3-29-97 Time: 1330 Location: 34-24-37/119-47-75 approx. 1.4 miles off Hope Ranch in 131 feet of water. Found 2 whales swimming directly to Holy. Speed: 3.7 knots. Breathing cycle: every 3 1/2 minutes.

    Date: 3-30-97 Time: 0930 Location: 500 yards off SB Point in 60 feet of water. Found a pod of 4 whales. Heavy mating acton. Stopped several times for iterludes. Great flukes, pectoral fins, spyhopping, and body shots. The only thing we didn't see was a breach. Speed: slow Breathing cycle: when neccessary.

    Date: 3-30-97 Time: 1220 Location: 34-23-24/119-42-37 approx. .6 miles off SB Point in 95 feet of water. Found a pod of 4 whales. Very friendly whales. At one point in time, the whales were on our port, starboard, and bow, all swimming alond side boat. What a whale SHOW! It was as if they were escorting us up the coast. Lots of flukes. Speed: 5.2 knots Breathing cycle: every 2 1/2 minutes.

    Date: 3-30-97 Time: 1620 Location: 34-23-20/119-49-09 approx. 1.9 miles off Goleta Pier in 191 feet of water. Found 2 whales. Speed: 5 1/2 knots. Breathing cycle: every 6 minutes. No flukes. On a mission to feed.

    Date: 3-30-97 Time: 1650 Location: 34-22-22/119-51-51 approx. 2.2 miles off UCSB in 251 feet of water. Speed: 4 knots. Breathing cycle: every 3 minutes. Found a pod of 3 whales. Friendly animals. Lots of flukes. Returned late to Pier.

    Date: 3-31-97 Time: 0940 Location: 34-23-83/119-47-60 approx. 1.8 miles off Hope Ranch in 97 feet of water. Found 2 whales. Speed: 4 knots. Breathing cycle: every 4 minutes. Some flukes and nice surface action.

    Date: 3-31-97 Time: 1230 Location: 500 feet off SB Breakwater in 20 feet of water. Found a single juvenile whale. Speed: 4 knots. Breathing cycle: every 2 1/2 minutes. On the surface most of the time. Stopped in the kelp forest for a rest. Great showing of whale laying on top of kelp.

    Date: 4-2-97 Time: 1225 Location: 34-23-58/119-43-55 approx. 400 yards off SB Lighthouse in 33 feet of water. Found a single juvenile swimming 2 knots or less, and resting at times in kelp. Great full body shot!

    Date: 4-2-97 Time: 1616 Location: 34-24-18/119-53-54 approx. .8 miles off Sandpiper Golf Course in 92 feet of water. Found a pod of 2 friendly whales that swam along side boat. Great showing, barrow roles ect. Speed: 3 knots. Breathing cycle: every 2 1/2 minutes.

    Date: 4-2-97 Time: 1649 Location: 34-24-52/119-51-52 approx. .5 miles off Isle Vista in 29 feet of water. Found a pod of 3 whales. Speed: 5 knots. Breathing cycle: every 4 minutes.

    Date: 4-3-97 Time: 1245 Location: 34-22-74/119-44-21 approx. 1 mile from shore in 90 feet of water. Found a very shy juvenile. Very small spouts and long periods of snorkeling.

    Date: 4-4-97 Time: 1110 Location: 34-23-37/119-44-76 approx. 1 mile from shore in 99 feet of water. Found a pod of 2 whales. These whales played on the surfaced showing us their pectoral fins many times. MATING?

    Date 4-4-97 Time: 1248 Location: 34-22-59/119-48-04 approx. 2 1/2 miles off More Mesa in 230 feet of water. Found a pod of 3 whales. One of the best spyhops to date. One whale was verticle in the water for at least 1 minute. Lots of flukes and very friendly animals.

    Date: 4-6-97 Time: 1330 Location: 34-23-50/119-51-77 approx. 1 mile off shore in 167 feet of water. Found 2 very shy animals in stealth mode.

    Date: 4-7-97 Time: 1214 Location: 34-22-73/119-38-77 approx. .7 miles off SB Cementary in 45 feet of water. Found 2 show offs. They were feeding, semi-spyhopping, people watching, swimming along side, fluking, barrow rolling, and ended their show wiht 8 breaches. Top 10!!!!!!!!

    Date: 4-8-97 Time: 1408 Location: 34-24-27/119-40-30 approx. .5 miles off Stearns Wharf in 45 feet of water. Another great show in front of the harbor. Found 2 whales blowing bubbles and feeding. Came to surface and rested on top right next to the boat. Went back down and then breached 4 times.

    Date: 4-18-97 Time: 1312 Location: 34-24-30/119-53-20 approx. .8 mile off Coal Oil Point in 58 feet of water. Found a cow a calf. Speed: 3 knots. Breathing cycle: Every 2 minutes.

    Date: 4-19-97 Time: 1210 Location: 34-23-93/119-40-92 approx. 1 mile from shore in 45 feet of water. Found a single whale. Very shy. Speed: 5 1/2 knots. Breathing cycle: every 6 1/2 minutes.

    Date: 4-19-97 Time: 1310 Location: 34-23-77/119-47-22 approx. 1.1 miles from shore in 116 feet of water. Found a cow and calf. Speed: 3 knots. Breathing cycle: every 2 1/2 minutes.

    Date: 4-20-97 Time: 1228 Location: 34-23-56/119-43-38 approx. 600 yards off SB Light House in 31 feet of water. Found cow and calf. Speed: 2 knots. Breathing cycle: every 2 minutes.

    Date: 4-21-97 Time: 1304 Location: 34-24-59/119-36-19 approx. .5 mile off Summerland in 32 feet of water. Found cow and calf. Speed: 4 knots. Breathing cycle: every 3 minutes. Also visited with Tursiops, Harbor Seals, and Cal Sea Lions.
