  • Caribou Migration Update: May 1, 1997

    To: Journey North
From: Robert Mulders, NWT Department of Renewable Resources
    Date: May 1, 1997

"I'm off to caribou meetings in Coral Harbour for a couple of days, so here is a quick update.

"Note how far these caribou have traveled over the past couple of weeks! It appears the Beverly caribou (#3924) is just to the west (100km) of its traditional calving grounds. The remaining Qamanirjuaq (Kaminuriak) caribou are moving eastward fairly rapidly."

    Location of Calving Grounds
    Qamanirjuaq Herd Beverly Herd
These maps shows the locations of the traditional calving grounds of the Qamanirjuaq and Beverly herds. The caribou are now traveling to the areas within the red circle. When do you think each of the caribou we're tracking will reach her calving grounds?

Also shown on these maps: Typical summer distribution (June to mid-August) for each of the herds is shown in green. The typical winter distribution is blue, and the remainder of the total range is brown. Also note the location of the treeline. (Click on the map and it will enlarge to a full screen image.)

The Next Caribou Migration Update Will be Posted on May 15, 1997.
