According to several students, the male robin returns before the female robin

The male is looking to establish his territory for his mate and family. One
student jokingly said that the early bird gets the worm. We did talk about
that as a need to find and secure a food source. The advantage to arriving
early in the spring is to secure a good spot for a nest. Some thought that the
male needs time to build the nest for his mate. The disadvantage to early
arrival is that the weather may change and the food supply could drop off and
    the robins could suffer.
