Hail
During a severe thunderstorm or tornado, water droplets in rising air can collect and freeze rapidly, forming hail. Hailstones can be very small, resembling rain or sleet, or they can be large, the size of marbles, golf balls, or even softballs. Large hailstones can cause damage to crops, cars, or other property and can injure or kill people when protective cover is not available. Frequent, very large hail can be a sign that tornadoes are forming or are on the ground nearby; however, hail can also accompany a thunderstorm that never spawns tornadoes.
