Introduction
Welcome to British and Metric Conversions
The metric system provides a universal language for measurement that can be understood regardless of where you are from or what language you speak. The United States, however, has not completely embraced the metric system, and so many items in the U.S. are still measured in English units, which are sometimes also called British units. Butter, for example, is measured in pounds, an English unit. Other items, however, are sold in metric units, such as bottled sodas. The mixture of systems can be confusing. What does a pound of butter convert to in the metric system? How much is a liter in English units?
Converting between metric and English units is, in fact, easily done. Before you learn how, you first need learn the symbols used in both the metric and English systems for properties such as mass, length, volume, and temperature.
