"Green waste" (as it is sometimes called) can be shredded and used as mulch or composted. Backyard composting bins or community-sponsored composting programs can help divert yard waste away from landfills.

You can put the following measures into place to reduce the amount of yard waste going into the landfill by 9 percent:

recycle Christmas trees annually, shredding them for reuse as mulch
provide composting at recycling centers, and offer the compost for sale
provide backyard composting workshops and sell composting bins to residents at discounted prices
