Channel Highlights: August 2002

Week of August 1

A remarkable perspective on Columbus Day ? coming just around the corner on October 14 ? is offered by programs from The Western Tradition and A Biography of America. On Thursday examine the European encounter with the Americas in "The Renaissance and the Age of Discovery" and "The Renaissance and the New World" from The Western Tradition, followed by "New World Encounters" and "English Settlement" from A Biography of America. Then make a thought-provoking comparison by leaping back two millennia the next day with "Alexander the Great" and "The Hellenistic Age" from The Western Tradition, for a look at earlier cultural collisions.

Week of August 4

There's still time to complete and get credit for one of the institute-format workshops before classes start. Consider Learning Science Through Inquiry, beginning August 5, a workshop that gives K-8 science teachers practical, inquiry-based teaching strategies, or Private Universe Project in Science, beginning the same day, which offers new ways to involve students and teach difficult science topics.

Week of August 11

If we look closely enough, the facts that surround us can be more fascinating than fiction. Thousands of students and teachers across the country collect data about wildlife migration and seasonal change, then share it via the Web through Journey North. Look for the Journey North introductory program to air August 14. On the same day, Unseen Life on Earth unlocks the mysteries of the microbial world, including the role of microbes in the environment, and The World of Chemistry explores the material that makes up our planet and its atmosphere.

Week of August 18

Head back to class with new ideas from the last of the workshops offered in the summer institute format. Science in Focus: Shedding Light on Science begins August 19, and Private Universe Project in Mathematics, based on the findings of a 12-year longitudinal study, begins August 21.

Week of August 25

English Composition: Writing for an Audience is for people in, or preparing for, a wide range of professions. Authors, journalists, songwriters, and professors are included in this series, but it also features professionals not often thought of as writers: nurses, scientists, police officers, and athletes. The series focuses equally on thinking and writing strategies and the writing process. Programs on August 26 provide information on the art of persuasion and ways to read even dense texts critically and effectively.
