The only cultural reference unfamiliar to me would be the foreign language used in the poem. I am assuming that it is Navajo. To better help me understand this work, I could get a tape or CD of people speaking Navajo or speaking in Navajo so that I could get used to the cadence of people speaking it.

it feels so preety on the lips yet , I too cannot understand it or SPEAK it .
The talk that we learned so well at our mothers breast so ununderstandable to others yet so calming to us .
