So, what have we done in this session?

  • In Part A, you looked at student work on a geometry activity that emphasized the development of oral language by having students describe characteristics of geometric shapes.
  • In Part B, you explored your own thinking regarding the challenges involved in describing how to find the area of regular and irregular shapes.
  • In Part C, we defined communication, examined the ways in which young children communicate their thinking, and looked more closely at the teacher's role in supporting students' efforts to make sense of mathematics through communication.
  • In Part D, you applied many forms of communication as you worked on a problem that associated real-life situations with equations, which further deepened your understanding of operations.
  • In Part E, you created your own lesson plan as a way to evaluate what you've learned.

Throughout the session, we saw the important role of communication in helping young students learn mathematics in a way that is meaningful and sensible to them.


Now you have an opportunity to reflect on this session and to communicate some of your thoughts and observations in your journal. This final journal entry will mark your completion of the session.
