In Part C, we looked at several types of representations. As you think about the Representations Standard, it is important to realize that representations are valuable tools in mathematical problem solving and in communicating about mathematical ideas. Students might choose from visual representations, such as pictures, models, or diagrams, to show their approach to solving a problem or to help clarify their understanding of a mathematical concept. They might also use tables, graphs, or variables to help organize the information they gather as they solve a problem. The choice of an appropriate representation is not always obvious, as students first approach a problem. It is only by "messing around" with the information and mathematics that they will find an effective way of showing their ideas and using them to reach a solution to a problem.
