After you have completed the activity and watched the video, reflect on at least two of the following questions:

  • In what ways did the students communicate their understanding of using equivalent fractions to add or subtract fractions with unlike denominators?
  • How did the use of groups help to encourage student communication?
  • How did the use of groups help the teacher determine the understanding of individual students? How did she use this information?
  • What are some of the techniques the teacher used to help students clarify their thinking?
