Let's look at an activity involving hexominos in a fifth-grade classroom setting. In this video clip, you can observe the students as they invent a set of sorting criteria and present their work to the whole class. Note the connections to other mathematics and to the other Process Standards.
Read the questions below before you watch the video, and make notes on each question as you watch (you may want to answer the questions after you've watched the video one or more times):
- What strategies or methods do the students use to sort their hexomino pieces?
- What connections do students make to their previous learning?
- Which Process Standards do the students address?
- What opportunities do you see to extend the activity and build additional connections?
Please watch the video excerpt at left (duration 5:18) of Ms. Sepeda's fifth-grade class as they work on finding and sorting the hexominos.
