Observing Student Communication
Introduction | Problem: Folded-Square Shapes | Solution: Folded-Square Shapes | Problem Reflection #1 | Problem: Sorting Shapes | Solution: Sorting Shapes | Problem Reflection #2 | Classroom Practice | Observe a Classroom | Your Journal

Now let's look at an excerpt from the Folded-Square Shapes problem in more detail. In this Observe Viewer, we see Mr. Ramirez ask questions to help Gabriel address his misconception. We've added annotations that highlight the communication aspect.

After you have observed Mr. Ramirez's class, reflect on the following questions:

  • In what ways did Gabriel have opportunities to increase his understanding of shapes and their properties as Mr. Ramirez helped him work through the problem?
  • How did the students use and extend their knowledge of geometry vocabulary, and what was the teacher's role in the use of vocabulary?
  • What methods of communication did Mr. Ramirez use to enhance students' understanding or to clear up misunderstandings?
