World as a Membrane

In an extra dimension, the particles of which we are made as well as the rest of the Standard Model can be imagined as waves on the surface of lower dimensions. In the picture, there is a three-dimensional space where the gravitational force lives (along with gravitons) and a two-dimensional surface where the standard model particles live (our world). In such a set-up, there can be hidden surfaces where other as-of-yet unknown forces and particles reside. In the actual theories, our world lives on a three-dimensional "surface" in a four-dimensional space, which is very difficult to picture. (Unit: 2)
