Mendenhall Glacier has retreated 2800 meters since 1910, and 580 meters since 1948. The trimline on the north side of the glacier is evident. In this part of Alaska, vegetation grows rapidly and bare, deglaciated terrain usually develops substantial vegetation within 50 years. The lake began to form in 1910 as the glacier retreat reached the southern margin of the lake.
