Transgenic Atlantic Salmon, AquAdvantage® Salmon, (background) and a sibling non-transgenic Atlantic salmon of the same age (foreground).

The genetic modification is the insertion of one gene from a Chinook salmon that produces growth hormone and a promoter sequence from the ocean pout that acts as the “turn on” switch. This gene construct allows the AquAdvantage Salmon (AAS) to produce its own growth hormone all year round instead of in the spring and summer months.
