How does working in a different base develop students' sense of number and operations? What does working with different bases tell us about place-value systems?

Working with a different base gets students thinking about exponents and the order of operations. It makes them more aware of the importance of place value. As they gain a better understanding of the base ten and place value they can do increasingly difficult problems and can do more computations mentally.
