Re: [Channel-talkalgebra] Anyone?

The timed tests were included as part of their grade. We have students also track their progress on a sheet that we provide for them that goes in the front of their notebook/journal.

The workshop was through one of the companies that does this sort of thing. The title was The Joy of Math taught by Kathleen Brennan. Sue O'Connell is another name I'd look for along this line. She does a lot of math problem solviing workshops. Also anything that references Marilyn Burns as the source of their materials; she's one of the nationwide middle level math gurus right now.

Thanks, Sheila! I am looking forward to teaching math, but I am nervous. I know I will really miss teaching reading (although I won't miss grading writing!)

I like the idea of the timed tests. Do you offer incentives for the students for your timed tests, or how do you get them to take them seriously? Do you actually count them as part of your grades?

Was the workshop you attended a math only workshop, differentiated instruction, etc.? Are there any similar workshops you would recommend?

Thanks,

Julie

Just another idea from a math teacher who is also certified in English.... You have the unique opportunity to really teach students that math is a language, root words, suffuxes, prefixes, etc. I

If you are meeting them for 90 minutes every day and are worried about basic skills, you have plenty of time to do this with them. What about spending some time (once or twice a week, at first) doing five minute add/subtract/multiply/divide timed sheets. Readily available from sites on-line.

I strongly agree with the person who wrote that the students need to not lose that they first learned to read -2 as "the opposite of" 2. They lose this and it causes problems.

There are also SONGS galore out there for math. I attended a workshop and was told that if I wasn't singing with my middle school students, they were missing out. If you don't sing, you can approach it as poetry;get the students involved in writing and you might just be amazed. EX: Twinkle, twinkle little star.... Circumference equals two pi r. Twice the radius equals d; d is diameter as you see. Now you have a circle where area equals pi r squared!!

Enjoy! I miss teaching a good piece of literature, but I love teaching math!!!

Is there anyone else taking this class at this time?

Thanks!
