I agree, Carrie. This was the way teachers taught--in the old days, pre-NCLB law. Maybe going back will help put America back on track in educating our children. Can't hurt, that's for sure.

Subject: [Teacher-talklearning] Gardner's Multiple Intelligences

Having read about Howard Gardner for years and learning about his theory of Multiple Intelligences, it was great to hear him actually contributing to and providing commentary during the session on Different Kinds of Smarts. As a teacher, his theory makes sense on all levels. It's a shame that many schools and subjects are assessed primarily in linguistic and logical/mathematical ways. He has freed us all up to appreciate everyone in our classes and to value and reward different types of intelligence. By doing so, we reach everyone and help all students to feel a sense of belonging and that they are valuable in the learning community that is our classroom. His approach of using student's strengths as a starting point or hook to engage them and then help them develop other strengths makes a lot of good common sense in the classroom.
